Sagrada Familia

The Story

In February of 2000 we went to Barcelona. Gaudi's Cathedral, "Sagrada Familia", is just breathtaking. If a cathedral is meant to make you feel strength, light, warmth and love, this one succeeds where all others fail - and it's not even finished yet. The Sagrada was Gaudi's crowning project - he was so devoted to it that when the project ran short of funds, he took to door-knocking from house to house, begging for donations to continue the work.

Ironically, and quite sadly, Gaudi died when he was run over by a tram whilst out asking for donations.

The sculpture over the main entrance is obviously in Gaudi's style - very gaunt and in some ways disturbing The four towers on the west face are dedicated to the Apostles Each tower carries a beautiful sculpture of an apostle or disciple The cathedral from a distance, still heavily under construction
Light patterns play on the half-completed roof of the cathedral Large areas of the cathedral still need to be finished Gaudi has used incredible shapes to ensure light permeates throughout Detail work is pre-fabricated on the ground floor before being fixed into position
A telling sign - a bunch of hardhats wait for the next group of visitors Light catches a detail inside the cathedral, whilst the walls remain open to the blue sky The incredible amount of work going on is clearly visible in this shot Looking across the uncompleted knave to the East Face, and its four towers
Josie is captivated by the cathedral Looking down into the half-finished interior of the cathedral Josie stands on a small bridge between two of the towers, the sunlight catching her face and making her look even more beautiful Up inside one of the towers, looking out at the detail on the top of the next tower.
Looking up a tower - each tower carries the words "Hosanna" and "Espiritus" The towers look beautiful against the evening sky Towers framed by a rough-hewn window The sun sets over Barcelona, and is filtered by the windows in one of the towers
Looking out over Barcelona, towards the sea, with the detail of a tower in the foreground An interesting view of the cathedral below, through one of the many rough-hewn vents in the tower Tower tips framed by hewn windows Looking back up to the hills behind Barcelona, with the detail of a tower in the foreground
