Lisbon

The Story

I attended a conference in Lisbon 14-21 May 1999, for which Josie joined me for the opening weekend. We had a great time - Lisbon is beautiful, old, with great food & wine, and it was our first truly hot weekend after what seemed like a long winter!

The view along the deck of a beautiful large gaff-rigged Dutch barge that we were hosted on for the day on the river Tagus Sunset looking out over Lisbon from the Castlo de Sao Jorge It may look like San Francisco, but it is indeed Lisbon - Pont (Bridge) de 25 Abril was built by the same US engineering company that built the Golden Gate Josie standing outside the Rossio train station - notice the beautiful Moorish horseshoe-shaped doorways
A beautiful, pastel-coloured house set high on a hill overlooking Lisbon. The photo doesn't do justice to the slope of the land! Stacks of dried, salted fish for sale in the Lisbon streets The Elevador De Santa Justa is a Neo-Gothic lift designed by an apprentice to Gusatve Eiffel to take pedestrians from Baixa up to the suburb of Barrio Alto (literally, "the high suburb") The view looking down from the Elevador de Santa Justa
The view out across the River Tagus from the Elevador de Santa Justa One of the more battle-scarred residents of the Castelo de Sao Jorge Cameron tries to fly, overlooking Lisbon from the Castelo de Sao Jorge A beautiful church with the River Tagus in the background
The main square (Praca do Comerco) between Lisbon and the Tagus Another view of the main square, with the Castelo de Sao Jorge looming in the background (top right) Lisbon's steep streets have been overcome by veniculars and trams Cameron & Josie enjoying a meal in a local restaurant, somewhere in the backstreets of Lisbon
